Township History
Pere Marquette was one of the three original townships created in the mid-1800s, when Mason County was first sub-divided. The logging economy of the 19th century gave way to an agricultural economy in the early part of the 20th century. Throughout much of the 20th century, the township enjoyed relatively slow and steady growth. It remained a largely agricultural community with most development taking place very near the city of Ludington.
That later evolved into an economy based on the chemical industry and tourism. Energy costs soared in the 1960s and '70s, and Consumers Energy built its Ludington Pumped Storage Facility on the Lake Michigan shoreline. Located on the border between Pere Marquette and Summit Townships, the Pumped Storage facility brought needed tax dollars to the community. The extension in 1990 of the US-31 expressway northward to US-10 has given the area new access to commercial markets in the midwest, opening new interest in commercial development here.
Pere Marquette Charter Township has always prided itself on preserving the quality of life and the interests of our community. Industrial and residential development plans always take into consideration a great variety of factors to keep the community well-organized and pleasant for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
