Locally known as "The Cross", the Pere Marquette Shrine was recognized as a State of Michigan Historic Site in 1966. This landmark on the Buttersville Peninsula is visible from both Lake Michigan and from Pere Marquette Lake, a tribute to the well-beloved Jesuit priest for whom Pere Marquette Township was named.
